How to write a design brief

The most important things covered in a written design brief:

What is the question?

· Why is the question current/ interesting/ important?

· What has inspired the question?

· In which context are you asking the question?

· Why should people interested in your questions?

How will find the answer(s)?

· Where will the research come from/ where will you gain the necessary knowledge?

· Will you interview people? Collaborate with specialists?

· How will you structure your projects?

· Will you have a brainstorming, research, design, building and presentation phase?

· What is the timeline for the project?

How will you present the answer(s)?

· What will the outcome of your project be?

· What are you proposing to achieve within the given timeframe?

· Which materials/ support will you require to reach this outcome?

· Which equipment will you require for your presentation?

You should be able to describe the core idea of the project in 100-150 words.

Add a proposed timetable for projects, no matter how simple or complex they may be.

Add images if you think they make your plans clearer.

Add details of proposed collaborators and their roles in the project if you are not working alone on this project.

uR Design Process

新學期的第一個Briefing，簡單來說也就是第一個Project，9/28中午每一位Design Products的學生聚集在8樓的Seminar Room，就像整個系的大拜拜一樣，我也感受到這個學校十足的向心力，R校師生的向心力和對於設計的熱情從任何的細節中都可以察覺，包括所有的行政人員都非常熱愛這個學校，說明了為什麼RCA能夠持續在設計與藝術領域持續佔有一席之地。RCA習慣將新學年的第一個Project開放成為每一個學生共同的主題，一方面讓所有一年級的學生認識過每個Platform的Tutor在做些什麼事，在三週以後的公開發表後也能夠依照自己的喜好來選擇自己未來的Tutor。

No Energy

聽起來像是個目前世界上最熱門的主題，包含永續設計，綠色設計，能源危機等等字眼的No Energy，在系主任Tord發表簡短的簡報以後，接著由一位穿著超級騷包藍色天鵝絨西裝的設計師來發表他的看法，其實我不清楚他究竟是個設計師或是藝術家，總之他的簡報內容跟永續設計一點關係也沒有，強調用藝術的表現手法來呈現No Energy的本質。相反地，許多Tutor強調Energy是一種Force，能量不會消失，只是藉由另一種形式互相的轉換，成為精神，思想，或是觀念。或許大家也都知道如果朝著節能減碳來討論No Energy也就是死路一條，設計師也不至於成為一個口說無憑的科學家或是發明家。每位Tutor準備的簡報都相當精采，絲毫沒有一點重複的觀點，也找不出什麼破綻不符合No Energy的主題。兩個小時的Briefing毫無冷場，我只希望有更多台灣的學生在場。

UK Day2

抵達英國的第二天，有些瞬間竟然忘記自己是身在英國，這種事好像常常發生，早上起床後其實沒什麼事，吃完中餐準備搭地鐵去找新的房子。非常感謝Ethan在我剛到英國的第一天就帶我逛了Kensington High Street的高級與平價食材的超市，有種趕進度的感覺。High Street是個好逛的街，往東直走就可以抵達海德公園與Royal College of Art，街上還有受到台灣崇拜的Uniqlo和Zara，買東西十分方便，你還可以到對面超市買兩萬塊一台的果汁機，Ethan跟我站著看店員表演了好久，你覺得你真的會買兩萬五一台的果汁機嗎？先買墨水夾吧。

這讓我一點也沒有時間用來適應時差，唸了設計六年之後也不用擔心為了時差而想睡或睡不著，但是生理的狀況還是慣性的會有點起伏，傍晚的時候喉嚨也開始沙啞了，反正就是這樣，在台灣熬夜到凌晨兩點會有的症狀，在英國傍晚六點後也就誠實的表現出來，過了一天也會好多了，不用太擔心。第二天沒有Ethan的陪同，我自己到大街各處探險，到每個街角的Housing Agency碰碰運氣，很不幸的所有一區的studio都是200pw起跳，沒得商量。

到達倫敦的第一天，就出發到了RCA拜訪了一些dp的學長，另外與行政人員聊聊，還沒開學就能夠感受到裡頭學生的創作熱情，跟在台灣相差很大。留下幾張設計殿堂的照片之後，很抱歉這是小GRD2替我留下的最後作品了（flickr）。

Day2我的相機在地鐵上被幹走，因為我很北七把相機同皮套放在MUJI背包的後側口袋，請自取別客氣，也不要以為側口袋可以放水壺很好用，我相信水壺也會被幹走然後喝光。芊帆被我的電話吵醒，我說我的相機被偷了，謝謝妳替我發飆也讓我感覺其實沒有那麼寂寞。Day2我躺在床上發呆好久，想了好多事，Vauxhall 附近可能有個機場，我只聽到遠遠的飛機聲音，房子外面有人在說話，我又忘記我在英國了。

Concrete disk redsign

我在Core77網站所舉辦的Greener Gadgets Design Competition同樣地也找到了類似的水泥產品:Harddrive，這位美國的設計師強調，用混凝土之類的天然材料能夠取代破壞環境的ABS等塑料，事實上混凝土在凝固的過程會釋放二氧化碳、甲烷等溫室氣體，在某種條件之下不符合Green Design的標準，這倒也無所謂，許多人也肯定新材料的作法，甚至這位設計師還真的做了模子翻出精美的Harddrive模型。
我不擔心自己的破爛Concrete disk概念與harddrive強碰，concrete disk強調透過實體的量感來詮釋抽象讀數位資料，同時將類比的memory記憶在水泥的表面上，像個考古學家一般解讀這支隨身碟一生的遭遇。
